Every year the Environment Working Group (EWG) will come up with a list of non-organic vegetables and fruits that have the highest level of pesticides in them, and they call this the Dirty Dozen.
Pesticides are meant to be toxic in different ways to the pests that are destroying crops, so consuming them will also be toxic to our body. Pesticides can cause hormone dysfunction, cancer, and harm developing brain of children and nervous system.
Here are the Dirty Dozen this year.
- Strawberry (highest level of pesticide)
- Spinach
- Kale (Kai Lan family)
- Peaches
- Pears
- Nectarines
- Apples
- Grapes
- Pepper (Chilli)
- Cherries
- Blueberries
- Green Beans
These pesticides in the vegetables are especially toxic to children because of their smaller body mass and also because their organs are still developing. So be extra careful when choosing food for your child for optimum development.
The EWG also proposes a Clean 15 list of non-organic vegetables with the least or no pesticides on them.
